CosmoCaixa (Carrer d'Isaac Newton, 26 - Barcelona)
Join us at the VIII Congress of Social Communication of Science in Barcelona, between September 29 and October 1, 2021!
The theme of CCSC2021 is “Planetary Communication and Well-being”. What is the the role of communication in improving the well-being of humans, the biosphere and the planet in general? During the last century, the well-being of human societies has greatly increased. However, it seems that this progress has only been possible through the unprecedented exploitation of natural resources and has generated serious inequalities in health and wealth. These global challenges require transformative actions that adopt a multidisciplinary approach, starting from a very clear premise: the health of the planet and the health of humanity are intimately linked.
This edition of the congress will be held at CosmoCaixa, in Barcelona, and is organized by AEC 2 (Spanish Association for Science Communication), the Center for Science, Communication and Society Studies of the Pompeu Fabra University (CCS-UPF ) and the “la Caixa” Foundation. It’s also organized in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Catalan Association for Scientific Communication (ACCC ).
NEWSERA will be featured in one event of the section “Deadly Sins of Science Communication”:
NEWSERA: Citizen science as a new paradigm of scientific communication
WHEN: Thursday 30 September, 2021, 15:00 – 16: 00
WHERE: Parallel 24 – Gula (Gamma Room)
WITH: Joana Magalhães, Rosa Arias, Karinna Matozinhos. Moderated by Gema Revuelta
Abstract: NEWSERA aims to show that citizen science is a powerful scientific communication tool. The project analyzes and evaluates the communication of European citizen science projects to improve their communication channels and create innovative new strategies through the #CitSciComm Labs, in which participants of citizen science projects, data journalists, professionals in scientific communication and representatives of different target stakeholders work together to assess and test communication strategies. Each #CitScicomm Lab consists of a series of co-creation workshops developed in parallel in Italy, Portugal and Spain and shared with a virtual community with experts from all over Europe. The effectiveness of the communication actions proposed in the #CitSciComm Labs will be reflected through five strategic guides aimed at citizens, research institutions, public administration, the private sector and professionals in science communication; in the creation of a flexible training on strategies to promote citizen participation through scientific communication and in the definition and implementation of the concepts Citizen Science Communication and Citizen Science Journalism.
The event will be in Spanish.
While the congress will be held with face-to-face meetings at CosmoCaixa, the venue capacity is limited due to COVID-19 regulations and tickets have already run out. However, it’s still possible to register for online participation on Eventbrite. Learn more about registration fees on the CCSC2021 website.
